Chapter Eight

All three guys were lifted off their feet. They were screaming as they were heaved into the forming funnel and the dust devil headed toward the city. I wondered if they’d make it that far? I spun around and found Sin struggling with another guy. How many fucking bad guys were there? Was there some sort of underground recruitment memo I missed? I aimed my gun but hesitated. What if I accidentally shot Sim?

Sin punched the big guy in the throat then used his legs to reverse their positions. He shoved the gun under his throat and pulled the trigger. All sorts of red and goopy stuff sprayed across the ground. Sin was breathing heavy as he sat back. “Fuck.”

“Yeah, I’ve been saying that a lot lately.” I muttered, not sure if he got the joke, heard the joke, or if it was so lame that he didn’t bother responding. I didn’t even care.

“You okay?”

I nodded. “Yup, tornado ate my bad guys.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “I don’t even know what to say to that.”

I shrugged. A bright light flashed to my left and the power of that discharge sent the hair on my arm standing up. “We should get inside.”

“We should. Yes.” Sin grabbed the dead guy’s gun. With one in each hand he glanced around the dirt. “On three you run for the…”

Lightning came from the sky in a bright bolt. It scattered outward like glowing tree limbs. It hit the hover car so hard that the hood collapsed. The front and back lifted as the middle sort of crushed into itself. A burst of wind and sand flew out in all directions.

Sin fell backwards, landing with his arms flung above his head.

The boom that followed was so loud that my ears started to ring. Another bright strip of electrostatic discharge came from the darkness heading our way. This time it landed in the dirt behind the other hover car. It charred the fucking ground in a five-foot diameter before shooting out from the main bolt. Glass broke and the steering wheel bolted out the back. Black dirt flew at us and I leaped over Sin, covering his body with mine as big chucks of burnt dirt hit my back. I doubt it’d do more than leave a bruise. “We have to get inside!” I yelled as loud as I could. I didn’t even hear anymore gunshots.

Sin struggled to his feet, wincing. He must have hurt something.

I ran into the open cabin door as the wave of dark finally engulfed the entire city. Sin came in moments later and I shoved the door shut. The inside of the cabin was destroyed. There was a hole in the back wall the size of my head and a chair was literally impaled in the floor. This cabin was not safe. I didn’t know if all the would-be assassins were dead or just trying to get the fuck out of here. “What do we do?”

Sin stumbled toward the bed and pulled it from the window.
